Glass Railing, Handrail & Balcony Buyers’ Guide

Finding a reputable manufacturer and installer of glass railings and handrails isn't easy. Neither is understanding the complex jargon of iron railings, or figuring out which popular metal railings will look best. After all, no two projects are alike. Your home is as unique as you are.

With this guide, our team at GCS Glass & Mirror aims to simplify the process of selecting and buying the perfect railing, helping you make informed decisions about glass railings, handrails, and balconies. Whether you're prioritizing safety, aesthetics, or both, we are here to provide an ideal railing tailored to your specific needs. So, where should you start?

The First Step Is Identifying Your Needs

We need to know if this is NEW construction or going on to an EXISTING surface.

The biggest difference between doing railing on new construction vs. existing structures is we can see and discuss what we are anchoring the hardware that holds the glass railings into. This is VERY IMPORTANT!

Each has  a different variation of thickness required.

When it comes to remodels or retrofitting a glass railing into an existing structure, we would need the original Structural Plan Sets to be able to see if we have the appropriate back underneath the flooring, decking or facia.

If we cannot get that then the flooring, decking or facia would need to be pulled up and then backing would need to be checked for and if/then added and then the finished surface be put back down.

Due to the already high cost of glass railings this can make or break the sale of a job really fast due to the added remodel costs so it needs to be the first thing discussed before just pricing out the railing.

It is unsafe to anchor into something that does not have the proper backing and is a huge liability to us as a company and a safety hazard for the property owner. We cannot install or even quote without it.

Create a section about safety mentioning that we and the customer must follow the building code for the type of building we’re installing in (commercial vs. residential) and where the project is located (does it follow city, county, or state codes). They can contact their contractor for guidance here, or we can provide it with their information. We install only materials with ICC reports documented for safety standards.

Do you know the types of handrails and glass railings that will work best for your project? It's a simple question, but there is more to it than you may realize at first. Here are the three main factors to consider before getting started.

What Are You Looking For?

When considering glass railings, it's crucial to identify the primary purpose of your installation. Are you seeking enhanced safety, aesthetic appeal, or both? The answer will help narrow down your options and ensure you select the most suitable railing system for your project. For instance, glass porch railings not only provide a modern look but also add a layer of safety, especially for elevated outdoor spaces.

Where Will the Railing Go?

Determining whether your installation is for interior or exterior use is essential. For outdoor railings, it's important to consider environmental factors such as exposure to rain, sun, and temperature fluctuations. In hot climates, specific materials and coatings offer extra protection against weathering. Your choice of railing types and materials for railings, ensuring durability, longevity, and maintenance costs.

Building Codes and Regulations

Compliance with local building codes is a prerequisite in any project. Each region may have different standards for glass railing safety, and it's vital to ensure your installation meets these requirements. Our team is experienced in navigating such regulations, providing you with the most secure and compliant solutions available.

Codes for how the glass is anchored, the products that are used and whether it needs a through glass handrail or top cap that can be used as a top cap are all factors that need to be discussed early on. They not only affect the estimated cost but also are important to pass inspections.

Each city and state has different codes to be mindful of when installing railing to ensure safety and that the railing passes all inspections. This is something to be mindful of during the design, quote, and install processes.

The Railing Types We Offer

Not all residential railings are created equal. Besides considering a style for railings in your home, there is also the issues of glass thickness and clarity.

About Glass Thickness

  • 1/2" Tempered Glass: This type of glass requires a top cap for stability, offering a secure and stylish design. It is ideal for residential railings where safety is a priority.
  • 9/16" Laminated Tempered Glass w/ Sentry or SGP Inner Layer: For a sleek, frameless look, this glass can be used without additional support structures. It is perfect for modern railings and provides enhanced safety features.

About Glass Clarity

  • Standard clear glass provides a classic, transparent look that blends seamlessly with any design.
  • Starphire Ultra Clear glass offers a high level of clarity for unobstructed views, making it ideal for glass deck railing projects.
  • Satin Etch (Frosted) glass adds privacy while maintaining a modern aesthetic. Frosted glass railings are perfect for areas where both privacy and style matter.

Consider Your Hardware Options

There is more to glass railings and handrails than meets the eye, and choosing the right hardware will make all the difference in your project.

Base Shoes

  • Raw Aluminum Finish: A durable and cost-effective option that provides a clean, industrial look.
  • Custom Cladded: Pick from our wide range of finishes for a personalized look, enhancing the overall aesthetic of any railing system.

Glass Vice Clamps

These clamps securely hold the glass panels, providing a modern and minimalist appearance. They are available in various finishes to match your design preferences.

Glass Stand-Offs

Stand-offs are ideal for creating a floating glass effect, adding a unique decorative feature to your railings. They offer a sleek and contemporary look, perfect for modern architectural styles.

Hardware Finishes

  • Brushed Stainless (Nickel): This versatile, popular finish complements multiple design styles for a sleek, modern look.
  • Polished Stainless (Chrome): Provides a shiny, reflective surface, adding a touch of elegance to your railings.
  • Matte Black: Available for select items, adding a contemporary touch to your railing system.
  • Railing Clamps (Part # S912 - FHC SQ Series brushed glass clamp with flat base for ½” and 9/16” Glass): These clips provide additional support and stability for your glass installations, ensuring a secure and professional finish. This is a type of hardware option not a finish. It’s usually installed between customer supplied steel or wood posts
  • Custom Powder Coating: If railing price is not an issue, we offer custom powder coatings for cladding, standoffs, and glass vice clamps, allowing for extensive customization. This powder coat also provides a durable and weatherproof layer, ideal for outdoor railing installations. Common Layouts for Your Next Glass Railing

A balcony may be just the beginning of your project, or not a consideration at all. Here are other common layouts where glass railings will elevate any design.

Glass Pool Fences

A popular choice for pool areas, these railings utilize glass vice clamps for a clean, modern look. They provide safety and unobstructed views, enhancing the aesthetics of your outdoor space. Glass pool fences are an excellent choice for safety and style, offering extra protection without obstructing the view.

The Importance of Accurate Cost Estimates

The most expensive railings are not always the right choice. Remember, both the right product and the right cost, matter equally.

Estimating Project Costs

To estimate the cost of your project, you must consider factors such as glass type, clarity, and hardware finishes. For instance, frameless glass panel railings might cost more than standard designs due to their sleek, modern appeal as well as material costs. We can help you plan your budget effectively.

Other Factors Affecting Costs

The type of railing, potential maintenance issues, and hardware finishes all play a significant role in determining the final cost. Custom powder coatings, high-quality glass like Starphire Ultra Clear, and specialized hardware can increase the overall expense. It's important to consider these factors to avoid unexpected costs. Sentry Layer Tempered Laminate Glass is more expensive than regular ½” tempered glass but does not need a top cap. Both top cap and laminate glass will be added costs so knowing whether you want or need a top cap is important.

Why You Need a Professional Installation

Our installation process begins with an initial consultation, followed by precise measurements and a detailed estimate. By working with our team of experienced installation technicians, you can rest assured that compliance with every railing safety code will be up to the highest standards.

Every region has specific building codes that dictate the requirements for railings, handrails, and balconies. For instance, the height of residential railings might differ from that of commercial railings. Not adhering to your city and state codes could mean redoing your entire project and significantly increase costs.

Safety and compliance go hand in hand, particularly in residential projects. Our railing systems are designed with safety as a paramount concern, and undergo rigorous testing to meet and exceed local building codes and safety standards. From tempered glass options to carefully engineered hardware, our products offer robust protection while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your property.

Benefits of Glass Railings

The benefits of glass railings include unobstructed views, modern aesthetics, and enhanced safety features. Glass railings also offer multiple advantages relative to other railing types.

  • Glass vs. Wrought Iron Railings: Wrought iron railings are known for their strength and classic appearance, but they can be bulky and obstruct views.
  • Glass vs. Steel Railings: Steel handrails and railings are highly durable but may require regular maintenance to prevent rust and corrosion.
  • Glass vs. Traditional Railing Materials: Traditional railing materials like wood require careful maintenance and can be susceptible to weather damage.

Tempered Glass for Enhanced Safety

Tempered glass is designed to shatter into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, reducing the risk of injury. This makes it an ideal material for railings in areas with high foot traffic, such as staircases and balconies.

Environmental Considerations

Glass railings are environmentally friendly as they can be recycled and do not require harmful chemicals for maintenance. Traditional materials like wood require staining and sealing, which can have a significant environmental impact.

Increase Property Value

With their clean, sleek look, glass railings and handrails can match and elevate any modern architectural style, making them an ideal addition to your home when looking to increase property value.

Customization Options

At GCS Glass, we know each one of our clients is as unique as their project. That's why we offer a wide range of customization options, catering to any architectural style and client preferences. From custom powder coatings to specialized hardware finishes, our products are designed to meet and exceed your expectations.
